India is an agricultural country, where 70 percent of the population is dependent on agriculture and allied sectors. This becomes the main source of income. The contribution of agriculture to the national income in India is high, therefore, it is said that agriculture in India is the backbone of the Indian economy. On the other hand, less than 10 percent of the population in developed countries is dependent on agriculture.
Role of Agriculture in the Field of International Trade: Many agricultural products like tea, sugar, oilseeds, tobacco, spices are major contributors to exports. In addition, we are exporting fruits some vegetables and flowers to other countries. Now we are exporting basmati rice to foreign countries. The proportion of agriculture related items is 50 percent. Apart from this, there is a contribution of 20 percent in the goods manufactured from agricultural products. Thus, agriculture accounts for 70 per cent of the exports.
Initially we were working on contract farming of medicinal plants in India. After that the company added some other agricultural practices like agro-forestry, horticulture and cultivation of medicinal mushrooms. Now the company has three plants of Cordyceps Militaris, Oyster, Button Mushroom, Medicinal Mushroom production units attached to the farmers. All these units have world-class infrastructure and adhere to all food safety standards as per domestic and international. Today many farmers in the panel of the company are associated with the company under contract farming pattern and they are earning well.
